Sales Tax Calculator
This is a simple sales tax calculator, which can be used to compute the tax owed when a consumer purchases certain goods or services. The calculator only requires two inputs by the user:
- The price of the product or service
- The sales tax collected on the purchase, which will be stated in terms of a percentage of the price
The calculator then provides the user with two values:
- The amount of sales tax owed on the purchase
- The total purchase price of the product or services, including sales tax
Consumption Taxes
When a consumer purchases certain goods or services, a sales tax may also be payable. Sales tax, along with value-added tax (VAT), use tax, excise tax, and tariffs are consumption taxes. Nearly all countries charge either a sales tax or a VAT. In the United States, sales tax accounts for around 25% of all the money available to a state to provide its citizens with essential services, while income and property taxes provide the remaining sources of funding.
In some countries, the price displayed will include sales tax. In the United States, the convention is to show the price before sales tax is added. All consumption taxes are collected by the seller and payable to the government’s collection agency. Typically, sales tax is not collected on three categories of purchases: groceries / food items, prescription medications and over-the-counter medications.
